The Grande Allée of the Tuileries Garden

In 2021, thanks to the involvement and generosity of more than 4,500 donors, the Musée du Louvre raised €1 million to restore the Tuileries Garden’s Grande Allée.

Launched on 14 September 2020, the ‘Become a Patron! of the Tuileries’ campaign aimed to raise the €1 million sum necessary to plant 92 stately elms and restore 26 stone benches in the Grande Allée of the Tuileries Garden.

In 1665, André Le Nôtre, who was Louis XIV’s garden designer, devised the extraordinary vista that stretched from the Tuileries palace to what would become the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. His intended design was impaired when trees were cut down during the French Revolution, turning a tree-shaded alley into an open mineral thoroughfare, unsuited to wandering strolls.

The Musée du Louvre consequently conceived an ambitious renovation project for the Grande Allée in order to embellish the famous axe historique of Paris, the axis of arches and avenues extending westward from the Louvre. Replanting two lines of elms brings back the original 17th-century design. It also cools the area, enhancing public wellness, and fosters biodiversity.

The Musée du Louvre extends its warmest thanks to the Société des Amis du Louvre, Parfums Christian Dior and Moët Hennessy.
